First Phase of St Peter’s Sixth Form Centre Completed

St Peter’s School York is proud to announce the opening of the first stage of their new, state of the art Sixth Form Centre, marking a significant milestone in the school’s evolution

The Sixth Form Centre is part of St Peter’s wider campus masterplan, a programme of investment designed to honour the 1,400 year history of St Peter’s whilst simultaneously innovating for the future. Work commenced in the summer of 2025 to convert the building from living spaces into nine modern teaching spaces, complemented by dedicated study areas and staff workrooms. From early 2026, pupils studying Politics, Business, Economics, History of Art, Psychology, and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) have moved into their new classrooms and study spaces creating a vibrant hub for Sixth Form learning.

Feedback from pupils and staff has been overwhelmingly positive. The refurbishment has retained the building’s historic grandeur, with beautiful Victorian tiles, stained glass, and intricate ceiling sconces visible throughout. These heritage features sit alongside modern enhancements, including high-tech lighting, advanced teaching screens, and an emphasis on natural light, creating bright, comfortable spaces that blend tradition with innovation.

This newly opened section of the Sixth Form Centre is located in the former Wentworth Boarding House. This building, originally known as Albany, has been part of St Peter’s since 1937. Over the decades, it has served as a sanatorium, a junior boarding house, and later a co-educational boarding house.

'By combining historic character with modern facilities, we’ve created an environment that inspires learning, collaboration, and independence.' said Caron McAleese, Head of Sixth Form. 'The refurbished Wentworth building is a place where pupils can truly thrive as they prepare for life beyond St Peter’s.'

Head Master, Jeremy Walker, said, 'The re-purposing of Wentworth marks the next phase of judicious investment in our campus. Our goal is to ensure that our pupils and staff have the best facilities to support their learning and experience of school and I am grateful to all involved in this project. The first phase of our new Sixth Form Centre is bright and inspiring and it has been great to hear such positive feedback.'

Working with local architects brown + company, St Peter’s is developing its campus to move from a three school to a two-school structure (St Peter’s Junior School and St Peter’s Senior School) by September 2026. This more cohesive structure will support a seamless journey from Nursery to Upper Sixth, improve efficiencies and allow significant investment across the campus.

By 2027 the rest of the Sixth Form Centre will be completed, featuring a dining space, café, lecture theatre, social spaces, and a Research Hub designed to support academic excellence and personal growth.

The refurbished Wentworth Building represents a strong start to this exciting new chapter in St Peter’s history.
